Partnerships

  • Co-founder and director

    Jeroen is responsible for developing and maintaining Akvo’s relationships with all types of partner organisations, with a particular focus on Europe and Africa. He works to achieve a balance in Akvo’s international activities, ensuring support is available for partners in countries where it’s needed. Until March 2012, he was chairman of Akvo’s board.

    Jeroen ignited the Akvo phenomenon after meeting Thomas Bjelkeman at Stockholm World Water Week in summer 2006 and has steered Akvo’s evolution to ensure it is relevant to, and supported by, a wide range of implementation NGOs, funding partners and global institutions. He started his career as a geologist in Burkina Faso in 1982 and holds an MSc. in Hydrology from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He worked throughout the 1980s in countries such as Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Niger, Mali, Indonesia and India, managing water supply and management projects on behalf of organisations such as the World Bank and the European Union. In 1998, Jeroen founded the Netherlands Water Partnership, where he built a dynamic network of over 200 member organisations that collaborate.

  • Co-founder and director

    Thomas is a visionary systems architect and designer with both a software and environmental science background. He is our chief technology officer and steers the team to harness the maximum potential from open source methods. He began developing software ventures in Britain and California, working closely with many early-wave internet entrepreneurs.

    A serial entrepreneur himself, he helped introduce web technology in corporate environments during the mid-nineties. In 1994, he helped start Stellent CMS which eventually sold to Oracle. In 1997 he co-founded web analytics company ISSEL and in 1999 Zezame, which built web page annotation systems.   • Chief financial officer

    Kathelyne sits on our board of directors where she is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, measurement and reporting of Akvo’s financial and administrative operations. She also coordinates the finances of regional hub offices together with our hub managers and is a board member of the Akvo Kenya Foundation.

    Kathelyne joined Akvo in 2009 as a project manager and gradually moved into a financial and operational role. Before Akvo, Kathelyne worked as an inspector and auditor at the Dutch Inspectorate of the Ministry of Transport and Water Management (IVW) where she analysed results and informed and advised policy makers and administrators in central government. She has an MSc in International Land and Water Management from Wageningen University and has worked on awareness-raising around irrigation and watershed management in field situations in Peru, Bangladesh and Jordan.

  • Co-founder and regional director

    Peter is a co-founder of Akvo and directed partner relationships for over seven years. He is currently responsible for growing and developing Akvo’s regional partner relationships, with a particular focus on Asia and South East Asia & Pacific. He also represents the Akvo Foundation on the board of Akvo Kenya. Combining considerable field experience with a large contact network, he is a ‘connector’ between governmental organisations, corporates, NGOs and knowledge institutes.

    Previously a programme manager at the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP), he combines technical knowledge of water management with the ability to mobilise an extensive, high level network of international development changemakers across the world. He has an MSc in integrated water management and disaster studies from Wageningen University. He operates from Akvo’s regional office in Singapore and spends a lot of time in Indonesia.   • Advisor, external relations

    Bert joined Akvo in May 2015 as Advisor for external relations. He has over twenty years experience in operational management and the provision of technical assistance and policy advice in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe in the area of water and sanitation. His experience spans regional development banks, development foundations, the UN, and donor country agencies. As Vice-Chair of UN Water, he promoted the sustainable development goal (SDG) for water and drove the design of a new monitoring framework. He joined Akvo from UN Habitat where he was director of the aid agency’s newly created Donor Relations and Resource Mobilisation Service (DRRMS), and head of its Global Water Operators Alliance Secretariat (GWOPA). Other senior roles he held at UN Habitat include director of the Human Settlements Financing Division and chief of the Water, Sanitation & Infrastructure Branch in Nairobi. He has also held senior positions in the water and sanitation units of the African Development Bank in Tunisia, and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS).

    Bert’s long career has included the organisation of some key events in the water sector such as the second World Water Forum, the Waterdome, the first African Water Week and a number of World Water Days, making him a well known figure to professionals across the international water sector. He brings to Akvo his extensive experience in all aspects of the project cycle, including monitoring and evaluation. Bert has an MSc in human geography of developing countries from the University of Utrecht. He speaks Dutch, English, French and German.

  • Talent growth & HR manager

    Maaike is responsible for the talent growth and human resource management at Akvo. She supports Akvo staff with professional and talent development. Her drive is to create healthy, inspiring and meaningful workplaces.

    Maaike has had the privilege of working in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors, in the Netherlands and abroad. She worked for several years in the field of HIV prevention and sexual reproductive health and rights, mainly with key populations as sex workers, youth and drug users.

    Before working at Akvo, Maaike gained more experience in commercial consultancy activities. Her main focus was communication and leadership development. Maaike is skilled in several training and coaching methods. She prefers working with appreciative inquiry and positive psychological principles, because she believes that these methods are the most effective to change behaviour and organisations.

    Maaike has a bachelor’s degree from the Universiteit van Amsterdam and a master’s in culture organisation and management from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Follow her @MaaikeVelden.

  • Office manager, Amsterdam

    Ingrid is Akvo’s office manager in Amsterdam. In this role, she is responsible for making sure the day-to day operations run smoothly.

    Prior to joining Akvo, Ingrid was the office manager for non-governmental organisation (NGO), SPARK. She has also built a solid background in recruitment, having worked as a recruitment consultant for over 10 years for organisations such as VitalSelect, Presenior and Manpower.

  • Programme manager

    Hans helps establish new programmes and consortia so partners can unleash the potential of Akvo RSR, Akvo FLOW, Akvopedia and Akvo Openaid. Hans has twenty years experience as a manager and director of programmes and divisions in the field of environmental and water management consultancy.

    Before joining Akvo he was a director of corporate marketing and communications and deputy director of the Environment division at Royal Haskoning. One of Europe’s top project management, engineering and consultancy groups, it is the oldest consultancy firm in the Netherlands, established in 1881. As a management consultant at the firm Proven Partners, he worked for several years on knowledge management initiatives. Hans studied civil engineering, water management and sanitation as a geohydrologist at TU Delft, including a period in Burkina Faso. From University, he joined Iwaco BV as a researcher, then project manager and later regional director, leading teams focused on water management and soil & groundwater quality. He is based in the Netherlands.

  • Programme manager

    Harro is responsible for developing and managing the European Commission funded projects at Akvo, which include AfriAlliance and GroundTruth 2.0.

    Besides working for Akvo, Harro also works as programme manager for the European Water Stewardship, a Europe-wide initiative to promote and improve sustainable water management with professional water users. Prior to this, Harro worked for Corporation Blue, a consultancy focused on water innovation and development. Harro started his career at the European Water Partnership where he held several positions, including lobbying for the topic of “water” at the European Institutions; organising events, including the European Policy Summits on Water in 2006, 2007 and 2008; coordinating the European Regional Process for the Fifth World Water Forum; developing and coordinating a number of European Projects under the LIFE, CIP and FP7 programmes and supporting the development and implementation of the European Water Stewardship programme.

  • Project manager

    Charlotte is a project manager and is responsible for managing a range of existing partnerships and programmes, as well as engaging with new partners. In addition, she helps partners implement and facilitate training workshops on the use of Akvo tools.

    Charlotte has an MSc in Sustainable Tourism and Environment from Wageningen University. Her master’s thesis for WWF Indonesia focused on participatory tourism development in the Wakatobi Marine National Park in Sulawesi, where she spent several months doing fieldwork. She also has a BA in Facility Management from Diedenoort University. Before moving into the international development sector, Charlotte worked in a variety of facilities management and communications roles in Australia and the Netherlands.   • Project manager

    Josje manages partnerships, supports partners in the use of Akvo tools and provides training. She is responsible for the partnerships connected to Akvo’s OpenAid product and is one of Akvo’s contact persons on International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) related issues. Some of the partnerships Josje manages include UNESCO, the Government of Liberia and the Dutch Red Cross. Prior to joining Akvo, Josje was an assistant project manager at Akvo’s partner the 1%CLUB, where she fostered relationships with partners, helped coach project owners and organised events such as the 1%EVENT and 24 Hour Action.

    Josje has also volunteered at the Dutch Council for Refugees, where she helped refugees learn Dutch and prepare for their Dutch integration course.   • Project manager, West Africa

    Machteld has expertise in environmental and climate issues, integrated water management and water and agriculture. Before joining Akvo, she worked as an independent consultant with several assignments in the water development sector, and as a farmer. Prior to that, she worked for the Netherlands Water Partnership, where she supported the Dutch embassies in West Africa and the Middle East in the formulation and execution of their bilateral water programmes. She also worked as a programme coordinator of media and politics for the Palestinian embassy in the Netherlands.

    Machteld has a bachelor’s degree in European Studies from The Hague University and a master’s degree in Environmental Sciences, specialising in Integrated Water Management from Wageningen University (MSc). She is based in Amsterdam.

  • Technical account manager

    Marten is technical account manager with Akvo. He assists partners needing in-depth technical assistance when testing or implementing Akvo tools. Marten is a specialist in monitoring and evaluation and feedback systems. He worked previously for War Child Holland, as a senior advisory of media and ICT for development, and as online communication officer at SNV Netherlands.   • Project officer

    Christien is a project officer on Akvo’s Partnerships team. In this role, she helps create new partnerships and works to ensure sustainable cooperation with existing partners. Prior to joining Akvo, Christien worked as a Sustainability and Community Officer for a social enterprise in the Netherlands and as a project officer for the Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development.

    Christien has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from HU Utrecht University of Applied Sciences and a Master’s in International Relations from the University of Amsterdam. While writing her undergraduate thesis, she completed an internship in South Africa for local NGO, The Oliver Foundation. Inspired by the social aspects of doing business and creating a positive impact in developing countries, she decided to focus on international cooperation and development.   • Project officer

    Annabelle is a project officer in Akvo’s Amsterdam office, where she delivers support and training for partners on Akvo FLOW and RSR. In this role, Annabelle helps partners like Wash Alliance International and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs bring projects online.

    Before joining Akvo, Annabelle completed a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences, with a major in political history. Her interest in different cultures took her on an exchange to Hong Kong, where she studied Mandarin for a semester. She is currently in the final stage of her master’s degree in International Relations.   • Technical account manager

    Geert Soet is a technical account manager. In this role, he focuses on improving the support and documentation for Akvo tools.

    Prior to joining Akvo, Geert worked in technical and strategic support and digital consulting roles for organisations such as Plek and ILUMY. He has also spent time volunteering for Fairtransport. Geert has a Bachelor of Commerce in Arts, Entertainment, and Media Management from Fontys Hogescholen. In his spare time he enjoys yoga, reading and racing his bike. He is based in Amsterdam. Follow him @deSoet.

  • Assistant finance officer

    Greta is a finance assistant in Akvo’s Amsterdam office, where she supports the Finance team on daily operational and financial processes. In this role, Greta is focused on project controlling and project budgeting, as well as providing support in areas related to human resources and legal functions.

    Greta is currently studying International Business Management with a specialisation in Finance at Hanze University of Applied Sciences. Before joining Akvo, she spent a semester in Germany. She also has volunteer experience in a number of areas including politics, event organisation and team management.

  • Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning coordinator

    Anita is a Monitoring & Evaluation specialist. She is responsible for coordinating the Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (PMEL) team of the Watershed – Empowering Citizens strategic partnership. In this programme, Akvo has partnered with IRC, Simavi and Wetlands International to build capacity in lobbying and advocacy for sustainable and inclusive water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services within civil society organisations in Kenya, Uganda, Bangladesh, India, Ghana and Mali. Anita also works with the Akvo team to further improve the PMEL component in Akvo RSR, and to develop Akvo’s PMEL support services for partners.

    Prior to joining Akvo, Anita worked as a consultant in Indonesia as coordinator of SNV’s advisor introduction programme, and researcher on human trafficking for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Indonesia. She has also held roles as the senior PME officer at SNV Head Office in the Netherlands, an advisor on civil society strengthening at SNV in Nicaragua, a programme manager at SNV in Ethiopia, and the gender advisor at a Directorate-General for International Cooperation (DGIS) integrated rural development programme in Sri Lanka.

    As a child Anita lived in Pakistan, Kenya, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mozambique and Swaziland. Anita has a Masters degree in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Leiden. She is based in Amsterdam.

  • Manager, Akvo USA hub. Executive director, Akvo Foundation USA

    As executive director of Akvo Foundation USA, Henry is responsible for growing Akvo’s presence in the US. Henry is also the programme manager for Akvo FLOW and is responsible for FLOW partner support, providing technical support to current users and helping us understand current and future user needs. Henry joined Akvo from the World Bank where he was a geospatial analyst overseeing R & D and implementation of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques within World Bank studies and programmes. 

    Henry’s been passionate for all things geographic ever since his childhood on a farm in England. This led to many adventures on geography field trips and finally to a BSc in Marine Geography from Cardiff University and an MA in Geography from the George Washington University, where he wrote his thesis on using GIS and remotely sensed data to map variabilities in health and wealth outcomes in the neighbourhoods of Accra, Ghana. Between academic tours he worked for South African National Parks as a Social Ecologist and did a stint at Foxtons in London (complete with his own Mini). Henry loves being outdoors, running and reading.

  • Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist

    Ethel advises partners on the use of Akvo tools for good quality Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E). She also co-leads the expansion of Akvo in Latin America and advises software development based on M&E needs. Ethel joined Akvo after working in the United States, South Asia and Latin America, including roles as M&E advisor to the Honduran Ministry of Health’s HIV/AIDS programme and supporting South Asia’s Community of Evaluators through work with the International Development Research Centre.  

    Ethel started her career in the food security sector where she soon learned the power of data and evidence-based story telling in shifting paradigms and improving project implementation. This led her to honing in on research, monitoring and evaluation skills during her graduate studies in Public and Non Profit Management at New York University and to pursuing jobs that would allow her to unveil the stories behind data. She is fluent in English and Spanish, enjoys cooking and reading, and recently completed a yoga teacher certification programme. Follow her @ethelnmc.

  • Manager, West Africa hub

    Emeline is the West Africa hub manager for Akvo. In this role, she is responsible for developing partnerships in the West Africa region and giving training and support on Akvo tools to existing partners.

    Emeline brings to Akvo her experience in the water sector and in international programme implementation. Prior to joining Akvo, Emeline worked in Burkina Faso as the deputy director of a water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programme that was implemented in four countries and financed by USAID. In this role, she coordinated WASH activities for eight international partners and their local partners. She also gained valuable experience in various countries in East and West Africa during her time at WASTE, an NGO that is focussed on sanitation and developing entrepreneurship.  She has also spent time as research fellow at UNESCO-IHE, doing research in Senegal, Ghana and Tanzania.

    Emeline has experience looking at both the technical and social sides of water issues, having received a M.Eng from Ecole Nationale du Génie de l’Eau et de l’Environnement in Strasbourg and an M.Sc in water management from UNESCO-IHE in the Netherlands.   • Programme manager, West Africa

    Abdoulaye is programme manager in West Africa where he helps our partners implement monitoring and evaluation programmes using Akvo tools.

    Prior to joining Akvo, he was director of the Population, Environmental and Health Study and Research Center (CERPES) in Burkina Faso. Before that he was regional monitoring and evaluation specialist for USAID West Africa Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (USAID WA-WASH). He has also worked in monitoring and evaluation roles at the Population Council (an American NGO), Population Services International (PSI) and PROMACO (a National social marketing NGO affiliated to PSI). In addition he has provided consultancy to numerous organisations including Family Care International (FCI), UNFPA, AFDB, AES/BF (the former Save the Children Pays-Bas), Oxfam Intermón, Mwangaza Action and l’Initiative Privée et Communautaire de Lutte contre le VIH/SIDA au Burkina Faso (IPC/BF).

  • Project officer, West Africa

    Frédéric provides training and technical support to Akvo’s NGO partners in West Africa. He is a computer science engineer with a masters degree in GIS and strong knowledge of designing relational and geographical databases.

    Before joining Akvo, Frederic worked as Databases and GIS manager in several projects in Burkina Faso for SEREIN-GE. He also worked in Dakar as a volunteer for the Organisation International de la Francophonie, where he facilitated a mapping project.

  • Regional manager, West Africa

    Dagmar’s role is to help partners in West Africa scale the use of Akvo FLOW and RSR to achieve better results in the field, and improve the tools based on the needs of partners. She brings to Akvo considerable experience with international development issues, geography and local government, as well as her network in West Africa.

    Before joining Akvo, Dagmar worked for VNG International where she developed and managed programmes for capacity development in local government. She holds a Master’s in International Development Studies and a Bachelor’s in Human Geography from the University of Utrecht, as well as a post-master in International Development Studies from the University of Nijmegen.

    Dagmar is based in Akvo’s Mali office in Bamako, and has also worked extensively in Benin, Tanzania and Guatemala. She speaks Dutch, English, French and Spanish. You can find her on twitter @VerbeekDagmar.

  • Technical account manager, West Africa

    Rabdo is responsible for helping Akvo partners in West Africa implement monitoring and assessment programmes using Akvo tools. Before joining Akvo he was at the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), where he was in charge of the implementation of activities and expected results of the West Africa Sentinel Landscape (WASL) and biocarbon building and rural development across various projects in West Africa. He also led the GIS and database management team in charge of the geolocation – spatial, processing and collection of socioeconomic data for CIFOR programmes in Burkina Faso and Ghana. He has also worked for the Meteorological National Office in Burkina Faso.

    Rabdo is a geographer and GIS-Remote sensing specialist by training with a double master’s degree from the University of Ouagadougou and the University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne. He has been a part-time lecturer at the University of Ouagadougou and has participated in additional research programmes at the National Institute of Environment and Agricultural Research.   • Project manager, West Africa

    Banzoumana cooperates with partners and users of Akvo tools in West Africa, providing support during and after training programmes. To this role, he brings his experience in WASH and civil engineering, as well as his knowledge of the West African region.

    Banzoumana has extensive work experience in Mali (in all regions) and Burkina Faso. Before joining Akvo, Banzoumana worked for the Dutch NGO RAIN Foundation, and participated in the Young Expert Programme (YEP) Water in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. During his time in Burkina Faso, he worked for Action Against Hunger France.

    Banzoumana holds a civil engineering diploma, option Building and Public Works, from the National Engineering School of Bamako. He also has an advanced master’s degree in humanitarian WASH from the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2i Foundation) in Ouagadougou.   • Project officer, West Africa

    Birama is a project officer and trainer for the Akvo West Africa team. In this role, he works closely with partners on the use of Akvo tools in West Africa, bringing to bear his experience in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) field and his knowledge of specific areas in Mali. Birama provides support during and after the introduction of tools in developing training programmes.

    Before joining Akvo, Birama worked for SNV (Netherlands Development Organisation). During his career, he has built experience working in the fields of rural water, sanitation, water code in Mali, community mobilisation, water analysis and wastewater, planning and community development, and strengthening capacity on water decentralisation among municipality agents. Birama holds a professional master’s in Geography and History from the Normal High Academy of Bamako and a master’s in Geography from the University of Bamako. He is based in Bamako, Mali.   • Project officer, West Africa

    Lars is the local online expert for Akvo partners that are based in West Africa. In this role, he provides training workshops and helps local partners make optimum use of Akvo tools. His focus is on support and growth of Akvo FLOW, RSR and Akvo Sites. Lars is based in Mali through the Young Expert Program for Water (YEP Water).

    Prior to joining Akvo, Lars worked in various roles as an online specialist for international organisations like UNICEF, Textcase and AfricaRice. In addition to developing online platforms, Lars has supported and trained organisations in West Africa to reach their online goals. He has also spent time working as a freelancer in Benin.   • Project officer, West Africa

    Camille is responsible for developing Akvo’s activities and the use of our tools and services in the agrofood sector in West Africa. As a member of the Akvo Flow support team, Camille also provides technical support to partners in the field and is co-responsible for developing Akvo’s French support portal. She started her activities in September 2016 as part of the Dutch Young Expert Programme (YEP) Agrofood. She is involved in exploring and creating new possibilities to improve data availability and accessibility on agriculture and food issues.

    Prior to joining Akvo, Camille built a diverse track record both in terms of studies and professional experience. She built a strong foundation in research and analysis while earning her master’s degree in French Sociolinguistics and as a research assistant in International Studies at the University of Leiden. She also has a background in humanities, having earned a master’s in Environment and Resource Management at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She also obtained valuable international experience by studying in France at the Institut d’études politique de Paris and by completing an internship on Multifunctional Landscapes at the World Agroforestry Centre in Indonesia.   • Communications and administration officer, West Africa

    Wendemi is a communications and administration officer for Akvo’s West Africa hub. In this role, she helps tell Akvo’s story in the region by making global content locally relevant. She is also responsible for administrative management of the West Africa team, as well as training partners to use Akvo tools. Before joining Akvo, Wendemi was an assistance and monitoring officer for student recruitment at the International Institute of Water and Environment for Engineering. Prior to that, she was in charge of communication and multimedia at the Yam Pukri Association.

    During her studies, Wendemi was a peer educator for the Public Services International/Ivoirian Agency for Social Marketing (PSI/AIMAS). She has a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Marketing from the African Institute of Management and a DEUGII in English from the University of Ouagadougou. Follow her @IWendemi.

  • Manager, East Africa hub

    Luuk moved to Nairobi, Kenya in 2012 to setup the Akvo East Africa Hub. He is responsible for all of Akvo’s activities in East and Southern Africa, and steers the expansion of our work and team in the region which, as of 2016, consists of eight people. He is also a lead producer and reporter for WaterCube.tv and Akvo.tv, our video channels profiling people and issues in the development aid sector. Luuk graduated in 2007 with an MA in International Development Studies from the University of Utrecht.   • Finance officer, East Africa hub

    Phylis is responsible for the financial, administrative and human resource operations of the Akvo East Africa hub. She also assists with project activities for our partners in East Africa. In this role she helps train and support local partners on Akvo RSR and works with partners to create and update projects online.

    Prior to joining Akvo, Phylis worked as a procurement assistant for the Mavuno Church, where she had a range of procurement and finance responsibilities and also as a sales representative at the National Bank of Kenya. She has also previously held customer service, admin and sales roles. Phylis holds a diploma in Business Administration from the University of Nairobi and a bachelor’s degree in Business Management (Human Resource) from Kenya Methodist University. Follow her @PhylisWebi.

  • Project officer, East Africa hub

    Francis provides training and technical support to Akvo’s NGO partners in East Africa. He has seven years’ experience in the field of geographical information systems (GIS) and data management. Before joining Akvo he was a geo consultant at Upande Ltd in Nairobi, where he was part of the team that developed the VirtualKenya GIS portal. He also conducted spatial data collection (using Akvo FLOW and other tools) and provided training and technical support to Kenyan water point mapping teams.

    Prior to that he helped to develop data systems for the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Nairobi. As a student associate at ILRI, he was trained to work with communities in resource mapping and teaching community members practical skills related to GPS, data and GIS analysis. He has a Diploma in Information Studies and a Higher National Diploma in Library and Information Management from the Kenya Polytechnic University College, as well as an Undergraduate Diploma in Geo-informatics (with distinction) from the University of Twente.   • Project officer, East Africa hub

    Charles helps Akvo’s partners with visualisation of data captured using FLOW. He has three years of experience in web and mobile applications development. Prior to joining the Akvo team, he was a software developer for Kontent Ltd, a Kenyan Web development company. He also worked with Upande Ltd, a geographical information systems (GIS) company in Kenya, as a software developer intern.

    Anne facilitates Akvo RSR and Akvo Flow training exercises in the East Africa region. She also conducts user tests on Akvo’s tools to gain user insights that can be used for product development. She joined Akvo as part of the Young Expert Program Water (YEP Water).

    Prior to joining Akvo, Anne worked at User Intelligence as a customer experience consultant in the IT sector, advising organisations on their digital landscape by designing user friendly websites and software. After working as a graduation intern in the biogas sector in Rwanda, she worked as a human centered designer in the WASH sector in India and Mozambique.     Andrew is a project officer for Akvo’s East Africa hub. He is responsible for assisting with Flow training within Kenya and East Africa as a region. Before joining Akvo, he was a trainee at m:lab East Africa, which promotes entrepreneurial skills for sustainable ICT development. He has a technical background in mobile applications development as well as basic ICT support.   • South Asia hub manager

    Deepak Menon is the hub manager for Akvo in South Asia. In this role he oversees programmes and partnerships, as well as the Akvo team in South Asia and the Caddisfly team.

    Deepak has a number of years experience in information technology and communications, having worked in sales and marketing roles at Oracle, and as a research analyst at Frost and Sullivan. In 2008, he moved to the charitable foundation Arghyam, where he was head of the India Water Portal and was part of a team of early advocates of open data, social media participation and large scale volunteering. In recent years, he has also had his own consulting business, been involved in fund raising for a start up venture and has taught Sustainability Management at Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, and Business Communication at Indo-German Training Centre. He has also acts as a mentor to the founders at OnlineRTI.com

  • Partnerships manager, South Asia

    Ayan Biswas, partnerships manager, South Asia

    Ayan leads Akvo’s partnerships engagement process in South Asia. Before joining Akvo, he worked as a senior advocacy manager at Arghyam, and was responsible for seeding and architecting the Fluoride Knowledge and Action Network (F-KAN). Prior to working at Arghyam, Ayan was a research scientist at People’s Science Institute (PSI), Dehradun, during which he trained various NGO representatives, village council members and social action groups on water quality management.

    Ayan is a Nuffic Fellow and has an MSc in Environment Sciences from UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education. He also holds an MBA in Public Systems Management from the Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management, Kolkata. Ayan is based in Delhi. Follow him @biswa4.

  • Advisor, Asia hub

    Rajashi joins Akvo with almost three decades experience as a monitoring and evaluation specialist in water and sanitation, public health, gender and integrated development. She plays a critical role shaping and strengthening Akvo’s programmes in Asia. Before Akvo she monitored and evaluated projects for organisations such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Department of Foreign and International Development (DFID), UNICEF UK, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Government of India. 

    Rajashi has worked on assignments across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Canada, the U.S. and Central America, including six years as Country Director, India for US-based Water For People. There, she set up the local office and executed programmes in India, one of which used Akvo FLOW for water point mapping. She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from the University of Calcutta, India and an MPhil in Economics and Politics of Development from the Department of Economics, University of Cambridge, UK.   • Programme officer, Asia hub

    Isha is responsible for partnership management and training on Akvo RSR and FLOW for Akvo’s Asia hub. She is the primary contact for Akvo partners in Nepal, Bangladesh and India. Isha is a sociologist by training, with a Master’s in Sociology from Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi. Her postgraduate research analysed the history of biodiversity conservation in India, with a focus on the urban areas as newer sites of resource conflicts.

    In 2005, Isha completed an internship in an International Honours Programme on “Rethinking Globalization” in partnership with Boston University. Isha then worked in the corporate sector for marketing research and public relations firms. Prior to joining Akvo, Isha worked as head of the Public Relations and Media wing at Global Filmbooth Ventures Pvt Ltd, a community of short film enthusiasts, bringing the fledgling and passionate short film community in India to a larger audience. Isha is a Certified Pranic Healer, having been trained on the ancient system of healing that seeks to balance energy flows in the human body. She is based in Delhi.   • Programme officer, Asia hub

    Jigmy is responsible for conducting training on Akvo FLOW and RSR in Nepal and other countries. He also initiates and strengthens coordination between NGOs, INGOs and governments on the use of Akvo tools in Nepal, as well as other Akvo FLOW users in South Asia. Jigmy started off as a microbiology graduate from Tribhuwan University in Nepal, and later worked for 3 years in Dubai, United Arab Emirates as an IT Assistant in a private firm. Returning to Nepal in 2012 he started to work with Lumanti Support Group for Shelter, a national NGO and member of Nepal WASH Alliance as water, sanitation and hygiene as Monitoring and Documentation Officer, having earlier acquired hands-on experience of as a monitoring and documentation associate in a local NGO in Nepal.

    During his tenure in Lumanti, Jigmy was trained on both RSR and FLOW, and was one of the key drivers for their use and uptake in the WASH Alliance. He has also written blogs for the WASH Alliance of his experience in using Akvo FLOW in the field. He has shared the use of Akvo FLOW by Nepal WASH Alliance in its outcome monitoring, in the 37th International WEDC Conference held in Hanoi, Vietnam in September, 2014.   • Programme manager

    Stefan is a programme manager for Akvo in South East Asia. In this role, he supports the management of Akvo’s programmes in the region, overseeing existing partnerships and facilitating our engagement with new partners. He is also responsible for helping build Akvo’s operations in Australia and the Pacific.

    Stefan has worked in roles across government, academia and the NGO sector in areas such as environmental policy, public health and sustainability. His most recent role prior to joining Akvo was as assistant manager focusing on international sustainability issues in the Australian Government Department of the Environment.

    Stefan has a Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Economics from Australian National University, Canberra and completed the Fenner School of Environment & Society Honours Program. He has also spent time living and working the Netherlands and Germany and as an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development in Cambodia. Stefan is based in Australia.   • Consultant, South East Asia

    Aulia is responsible for helping to establish Akvo in Indonesia, acting as a liaison with local partners, consulting on local engagement and supporting training workshops in the region. Prior to joining Akvo, Aulia spent nearly eight years working in communications for WWF-Indonesia. Aulia began his career in journalism and has held positions as a reporter and radio announcer. He studied communications at Airlangga University, where he has since acted as part-time lecturer for the Department of Communications Studies.

  • Operations manager Akvo SEAP

    Anna-Marthe is a regional operations manager in Akvo’s South East Asia & Pacific hub where she sets up and oversees operational and financial processes. In addition, she manages projects and provides back-up to training activities if needed. Anna-Marthe initially joined the SEAP hub as part of the Young Expert Program for Water (YEP Water). Prior to this, Anna-Marthe was based in Akvo’s Amsterdam hub where she helped the partnership and development teams understand how partners are using Akvo tools, and provided technical consultancy support. Before joining Akvo, Anna-Marthe held an internship in marketing and communications at Rabobank. 

    Anna-Marthe has an MSc in Strategic Management from the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. During the course of her studies, she has worked on research projects on the potential of social media within Dutch aid and development organisations and conducted field research in Kenya to develop a business plan for a secondary school for underprivileged girls in Kenya. She has also participated in Business Administration exchange programmes in Canada, Thailand, and Israel. Her master thesis was on the influence of social innovations on international joint venture success in different institutional contexts.   • Programme and technical advisor, South East Asia

    Joy is a programme manager and technical advisor based in Akvo’s South East Asia and Pacific hub. His primary responsibilities include business development and managing Akvo programmes in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam and providing software help and advising partners in the Asia Pacific region.

    Joy works closely with the Akvo product team, providing insights into user stories and partner behaviour. He also helps train partners on Akvo products in the region. Joy is Akvo’s local open data and open source champion and liaison.

    Joy joined Akvo from IBM India Software Labs, where he worked as a senior consultant. Prior to that, he spent four years at Sterling Commerce where he worked as a senior software developer. He has a bachelor of Technology, Electronics Engineering, from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

    An avid motorcyclist, Joy has traveled across India on his motorcycle. He also enjoys bird watching and photography. Joy operates from Akvo’s regional office in Singapore and spends a lot of time in Vietnam. Follow him on Twitter @joycarpediem.

  • Project officer, SEAP

    Nikki is a project officer for Akvo in the South East Asia & Pacific Hub. In this role she trains and supports partners in the use of Akvo’s tools, and the designing of their surveys for decision support. She is also helping build and maintain partnerships in Australia and the Pacific.

    Prior to joining Akvo, Nikki worked as tutor and demonstrator at the Australian National University focusing on courses in sustainable development and Geographical Information Systems. She has published academic papers on mapping of fear of crime and its impact upon behaviour, and the role of base maps upon the recording of spatial data.

    Lissy manages partnerships with a number of organisations and consortia, including Aqua for All, Amref and Football for Water, and gives training about the use of Akvo tools. She loves to travel and journeyed overland from Turkey to Kyrgyzstan in spring 2013. 

    Lissy joined Akvo at the end of 2011, having recently completed a masters degree in Socialisation and Youth Policies at Utrecht University, where she majored in Education, Youth and International Cooperation and Aid. She’s spent time conducting local research in Uganda on parental participation in education and has worked for NGOs including SNV Uganda and Edukans. She also worked at our neighbours, the 1%Club.     Ima is a project manager for Akvo in SEAP and is responsible for helping manage Akvo’s role in the OXFAM “Empower Youth for Work” programme. In this role, she coordinates Akvo’s services for our partners within the programme, both for data collection and communication.

    Prior to joining Akvo, Ima worked as a database and networking coordinator at an Indonesian-based NGO focusing on youth empowerment and education using participatory media approaches. During her career, she has also worked for various organisations in roles spanning media production, human resources training and counseling and film/video facilitation.   • Head of communications

    Jo has worked in marketing and communications in both the IT and non-profit sectors and began working for Akvo in 2010. For seven years, she was at Firefly Communications, a highly-regarded British technology PR agency. At Firefly she represented tech, telecoms and media clients including FT.com, Reuters Business Information, TDK, Vodafone and the World Internet Forum. She later helped to lead the company’s expansion into Europe, establishing its French and German operations.

    Following a period at another tech PR firm, the Hoffman Agency, working on Philips Semiconductors, Jo moved into the charity sector, initially focusing on fair trade.  She was PR manager at People Tree, a fair trade and ecological fashion company, and also worked for Cafédirect and the Fairtrade Foundation. Following this she moved to national hospice charity Help the Hospices for four years, conducting marketing and PR related to its UK and international work, as well as acting as a consultant to local hospices.     Emily is a communications consultant, supporting the Akvo team. She has worked in technology communications for more than 13 years. During this time, Emily has worked on a diverse mix of business and consumer technology campaigns for multi-national brands. After three years at a specialist technology public relations agency, Emily joined global communications consultancy Hill and Knowlton, where she managed local, regional and global campaigns for organisations such as HP, Intel and Motorola.
    After four years in the company’s Chicago office, Emily relocated to Hill and Knowlton London where she expanded her role to include campaigns in Europe, Middle East and Africa and gained invaluable experience in cross-cultural communication. Following this, Emily spent two years at Nokia where she managed communications for the company’s music and fashion handsets. Emily has a BA in Journalism from Indiana University.   • Art director

    Linda is responsible for helping tell Akvo’s story visually. In this role, she lends her graphic design skills to many areas of the company, contributing to training materials, presentations, press materials and grant proposals. Inspired by her love of fairy tales and stories, Linda creates designs in which small stories are hidden. Prior to joining Akvo, Linda worked as a consultant for Artamuse, where she developed lesson projects about audio-visual arts for elementary schools.

    She also worked as a graphic designer and PR and marketing manager for ZZDP Architecten. Linda’s passion for interpretive designs and cultural heritage has led her to volunteer her time and expertise to organisations such as Centraal Museum, NorthernLight, and CODA Museum. She has also volunteered as a teacher of fine arts and cultural heritage at a number of schools in the Netherlands. Linda has a BA in Cultural Heritage from Reinwardt Academy in Amsterdam and a BA in Fine Arts in Education from the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht, the Netherlands.   • Communications executive

    Alvaro works in Akvo’s Amsterdam team and helps to improve how we describe Akvo to key audiences, and how we reach out and engage with them. He was previously communication manager for Res Artis, the world’s largest network of artist residences, having been a cultural manager of Proyecto’ ace, an artist residence in Argentina.   • Communication and graphic design, South East Asia & Pacific

    Mano has a dual role supporting the South East Asia & Pacific (SEAP) hub partnerships and providing graphic design support for Akvo’s global communications team. He is responsible for helping tell Akvo’s story regionally and globally, both in printed material and digitally, as well as driving the regional communications strategy of Akvo SEAP.

    Prior to joining Akvo, Mano worked as a freelance graphic designer, providing branding and design support to a variety of clients. Throughout his career, he has held a number of marketing, brand and content management roles for organsations like Happy Trails, KPN N.V. and Telfort B.V.

    Mano began his studies in industrial design at Haagsche Hogeschool, but has always been drawn to the arts and design. He has an MSc from the Department of Sociology Leisure Studies from the University of Tilburg. Mano hails from the Netherlands. He currently operates from Akvo’s regional office in Singapore and spends a lot of time in Indonesia.

Engineering & design

  • Head of product development and technical operations

    Lars is responsible for overseeing all aspects of product development and technical operations within Akvo, In this role, he manages the teams responsible for developing and operating our digital products, ranging from concept management to operations of the digital platform.

    Lars has a great deal of experience in software development, having worked in the industry since 1995. Prior to joining Akvo, he was most recently the CTO of the vehicle e-trade startup, Garantibil Sverige AB. His prior roles include software developer, CEO, game developer and computer textbook author. He has also served as a board member for a number of companies and organisations, including Jayway Stockholm AB, Funded By Me and Svenska Kyrkans Press AB. Lars is one of the founders of Stockholm Makerspace.

    Lars studied informatics, media and communications science, sociology, philosophy and english at Umeå University. He is also a certified scrum master. Lars is based in Stockholm. Follow him @barse

  • Engineering team lead

    Iván is currently focused on development of the back-end workings of Akvo’s software tools. Prior to joining Akvo, he spent five years at Openbravo where most recently he was the lead engineer for Openbravo Mobile and worked on the design and implementation of Openbravo 3. Iván has also worked as a software development contractor, system administrator and IT department head in other organisations. He is also a free/open source software user and advocate.

    Iván has a bachelors degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the Central American University of Technology in Honduras and a diploma in Information Technologies from the Foro Europeo, Business School of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain.   • Co-founder and developer

    Gabriel has been an independent software developer for 15 years. He works primarily in Python, the programming language upon which Akvo RSR is built, along with the website framework Django. Gabriel also leads the development and management of Akvo’s web servers based on Linux/Apache and MySQL.

    He has been involved in a number of advanced software projects using emerging programming languages. He worked from 1999 to 2003 alongside Akvo founder Thomas Bjelkeman to build Zezame, an early AJAX-based application for web-based annotations. He has developed web applications for SEB, one of Sweden’s largest banks, for Microsoft Sweden and for Gambro, a medical equipment manufacturer.   • Design and user interface lead

    Loïc is responsible for web design and front-end user interface for Akvo. Prior to joining Akvo, Loïc was head of design at Arkkeo Oy, where he developed their user interface, and was also involved in user experience analysis, marketing and business strategy.

    Prior to that, Loïc was the head of design for blinkbox, the first independent on-demand movie and television streaming service in the UK. Having joined at the inception of the company, he created the company’s visual identity and branding, as well as the first version of the website and video player. Loïc has also worked as a freelance illustrator and web designer for a diverse range of clients including photographers, fashion designers, architects and musicians. Loïc has a degree in Illustration and Computer Graphics from the Conservatoire Nationale des Arts et Métiers in Paris and a DEUG from the University of Bordeaux. He is based in Helsinki.   • Developer

    Daniel joined Akvo in 2008, working on the development of Akvo RSR. He has contributed to all of Akvo’s products and had a key role in the release of RSR 2.0 and partner sites. Now he is focusing on the future evolution of the service-oriented backend platform. At Akvo, the major tools used are Clojure, Python, JavaScript & html. Prior to Akvo, Daniel developed apps for Mac and iOS both as a consultant and for his own projects.

    He holds a BSc in Software Engineering from Lund University and has an MSc in International Project Management from Chalmers University of technology and Northumbria University. Even if Daniel is focusing on the backend he does enjoy working on the front end, thinking about user needs and how to make the experience as streamlined as possible.   • User interface developer

    Gabe is responsible for turning Akvo user interface design drafts into vibrant and interactive ones. He has a background in web and mobile application design and development. Previous projects include A Soft Murmur, a web and Android based ambient sound mixing application, used as a productivity and de-stressing tool. He’s skilled in JavasScript, jQuery, HTML5 and CSS. He has a Masters degree in Economics and English Literature, and is based in the UK.

  • Interaction designer

    Kiarii is an interaction designer. In this role, he is responsible for user experience and usability of Akvo tools. Prior to joining Akvo, Kiarii worked as a user experience (UX) designer at Asema electronics and as a project researcher at Aalto University in Helsinki. He has also worked as a freelance designer.

    Kiarii’s aim is to become a human experience designer by exploring and building various human capacities and dimensions from the realms of design. His interests include design for optimal engagement, psychology, philosophy, history, sociology and everything in between. He has a bachelor’s degree in media engineering and a master’s degree in human computer interaction. He is based in Helsinki.

  • Product team lead

    Mark leads the Product team. In this role, he is responsible for defining the user experience of Akvo’s various products, and overseeing product strategy and the development roadmap.

    Prior to this, Mark was the editor of Akvopedia, combining his technical knowledge on sustainable, simple water technology with his broad technical editorial experience to maintain the high quality standards of the Akvopedia content and the online community which contributed to it. Mark has also led Akvo’s role in the WASH Consortium and worked as a key member of the team developing and deploying Akvo FLOW as a programme and product manager.

    Studying physics and philosophy of technology at Technical University of Twente, he holds a PhD in physics from the Eindhoven Technical University. Previously head of communication of a Dutch scientific institute working on nuclear fusion, he also led communications for the European Fusion programme and international fusion experiment, ITER. On the Working Group on Development Techniques (WOT), at University of Twente, he develops and disseminates knowledge of simple technology for using wind, water and solar power in developing countries.     As part of the Product team, Jana helps to drive the development of Akvo products. Her work entails conducting market research, understanding user needs, defining product features and collaborating with the design and engineering team on development. She is currently focused on Akvo FLOW. 

    Jana joined Akvo from Entrepreneur in Residence in Malaysia where she was a project leader. Prior to this she worked as a monitoring and evaluation assistant at the Prince Claus Fund Foundation in the Netherlands as well as conducting internships at the Permanent Mission of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations in the USA and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic in Slovakia. She has Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Faculty of Political Sciences and International Relations at Matej Bel University in the Slovak Republic.   • Product manager

    Nadia is responsible for the development of Akvo RSR and Lumen. She brings to Akvo a great deal of experience in microfinance and creating software products, as well as international experience, having worked in Russia, the UK and Germany. Prior to joining Akvo, Nadia worked as a project manager and business analyst for an international development consultancy where she helped develop microfinance platforms for partners in Central Asia.

    Nadia has a BA and an MA from the Department of Economics and Management at St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University. She also earned an MA from the Department of Economic and Social History at University College London and the University of Helsinki through the Erasmus Mundus programme. Nadia is based in Amsterdam.   • Project officer

    Arthur is responsible for project management and product development of Akvo Caddisfly, our smartphone soil and water quality testing system. Before joining Akvo, he completed a one-year traineeship with Dorcas Relief and Development, during which he developed its WASH Sustainability Assessment Tool, which he pilot-tested on multiple WASH projects in Ethiopia and Tanzania.

    Arthur holds an MSc in International Land and Water Management from Wageningen University and Research Centre at which he specialised in Water Resources Management, WASH and Sustainable Development. He is based in Amsterdam. Follow him @arthur_heijstek.

  • Developer

    Stellan is a developer, programmer and engineer who likes to work at the point where software and hardware intercept. He’s currently focused on developing Akvo FLOW, making it easier to use and more closely aligned to user needs. Until recently he was senior product engineer at the Blindsight Corporation where he created very sophisticated applications of machine vision for blind and visually impaired people.

    Stellan first met Akvo’s Thomas Bjelkeman and Gabriel von Heijne when they studied together at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm in the 1980s. Stellan stayed at the Institute as systems manager, eventually joining the team that built Astrid-2, a Swedish plasma physics research satellite. In the late 1990s he co-founded Concinnity, a maker of online business management tools and, in 1999, together with Thomas, the web development and management company Zezame. Stellan is based in Stockholm.

  • Release engineering lead

    Oliver leads the Release Engineering team, who are responsible for ensuring the various Akvo software products are well-tested, deployed and released in a timely and automated process.

    Oliver has worked as a senior analyst developer in several major financial services firms in both South Africa and the UK, including BlueCrest Capital Management, Morgan Stanley and Thomson Financial, where he helped teams improve their software development and release engineering processes. Oliver graduated in computer science and psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand and has worked since as helpdesk manager, software developer and analyst.   • DevOps engineer

    Oriol is a member of the Release engineering team at Akvo. He is an infrastructure engineer with a strong belief in DevOps culture. He is responsible for the automated provisioning, deployment, configuration, management and maintenance of Akvo’s underlying IT infrastructure. Overall, his main goal is to ensure the stability and continuity of all Akvo services relying on this infrastructure.

    Oriol holds BSc and MSc degrees in Computer Science from Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Spain. His background is in cloud computing and distributed IT systems. Previous positions include research engineer at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and DevOps engineering roles in other companies where he was agile operating cloud systems focusing on performance, scalability and high-availability.   • Developer

    Emmanuel is a software developer and is responsible for the design, development and maintenance of the Akvo FLOW backend application. In this role, he handles support requests of Akvo partners regarding problems and suggestions they encounter while using the FLOW application.

    Prior to joining Akvo, Emmanuel was a senior developer for T-Mobile Netherlands. He has also held web development roles with the East African Centre for Open Source Software and Uganda Martyrs University.

    Emmanuel has a BSc in Computer Science and Statistics from Uganda Martyrs University and an MSc in Computer Science from the Delft University of Technology.   • Product manager, Akvo.org website, and technical support

    As well as managing our internal IT systems and supporting Thomas in his role as chief technology officer, Lynn leads our current efforts to boost the web analytics and performance data available to Akvo and its partners to continuously improve how we all work. She began her career in IT support at a distribution company in Cape Town and then London’s South Bank University.

    In 2002 she moved to Amsterdam to take up an IT manager role at Skynet Worldwide Express, which, three years later, took her back to London for a further eight years. She loves the way technology constantly evolves and that at Akvo she’s in a position to influence and participate in developments that will have wide-reaching social benefits.     Jonas is a developer with a strong interest in open source software. He is currently focused on maintaining and enhancing the Akvo FLOW platform. Until recently he was working as a teacher of mathematics, computer science, physics and chemistry. He has a bachelor in degree in mathematics, computer science and education.

  • Web developer

    Guneet Narula is a web developer and designer. In this role, he is responsible for technical partnership support and helping train partners on Akvo tools. Prior to joining Akvo, Guneet spent six years working in technology and with open source tools and his work has reflected his keen interest in sociopolitical movements and how open source, open data and open access intersect with these movements.

    For the past few years, Guneet has been working with social activists to highlight the concerns of people affected by the Bhopal gas tragedy. He has also consulted on urban slum WASH mapping for Save the Children. Guneet has volunteered for OpenStreetMap, mapping Nepal after the earthquake and coordinating related activities in Delhi in days following the tragedy. He is also actively involved in the Delhi Datameet group.

  • Product development manager

    Samuel Rajkumar is a product development manager. In this role, he oversees the development of the Caddisfly water testing kit. Samuel joined Akvo through his work with TernUp Research Labs LLP, a collective of artists, designers and technologists. It was at TernUp that Caddisfly was created as part of an open source project to develop a low cost water testing kit.

    Prior to joining TernUp, Samuel worked as a web developer and has been involved in developing major content sites such as the India Water Portal, the India Biodiversity Portal and the India Sanitation Portal, among others. He has 14 years of experience in software architecture, design and development and has a Bachelor of Engineering from Gulbarga University. Samuel is based in Bangalore.   • Chemist

    Pradeep is a chemist on the Caddisfly team. He joined Akvo through his work at TernUp Research labs. Prior to this, Pradeep was a research associate at Tata Innovation’s Lab at the Tata Research, Development and Design Centre in Pune. While there, he mainly worked on technology development for water purification. Projects he was involved in included the development of filters for the removal of fluoride, arsenic and microbial contamination from drinking water. Pradeep is an inventor who has filed two patents and authored two research papers. He is based in Bangalore. Follow him @pradeepbalkunde.

  • Software developer

    Nischal is a software developer for Akvo. He joined Akvo through his work with TernUp Research Labs, where he developed the smartphone app, web sites and maps for the Akvo Caddisfly water testing kit. Before Ternup, Nischal developed software and lead development teams at obii.mobi, Australian Windows Publishing and Infomedia Ltd. An Australian national who has worked in both Australia and India, his experience spans e-commerce, finance, customer management, i18n, web sites and phone apps. 

    Nischal has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Bangalore University and a Graduate Diploma in Commercial Computing from University of Western Sydney, Nepean. He is based in Bangalore.

  • Product developer

    Saurabh is a product developer on the Caddisfly team. He joined Akvo through his work at TernUp Research Labs, where he was involved in developing the Caddisfly water testing kit since its inception in late 2011. At that time he was studying for a graduate diploma in Art and Design from Srishti School of Art and Design, Bangalore. His college diploma project was an early prototype of Caddisfly, for which he used self taught electronics and engineering skills.

  • Product designer

    Ishan is a product designer on the Caddisfly team. He’s been working on hardware design and manufacturing for Akvo Caddisfly since January 2015.

    Prior to joining the Caddisfly team, Ishan was a wristwatch designer for Titan Industries. Later he designed and developed an Android application for crowd-sourced data-gathering relating to civic infrastructure issues. Prior to this, he worked as an intern at several design consultancies. He received his undergraduate degree in Product Design from the School of Design, Loughborough University, in 2013.

  • Microbiologist

    Rajshree is a microbiologist on the Caddisfly team. She is currently working on developing a rapid coliform detection kit using a smart-phone application. In addition to performing regular microbiological experiments, she is also responsible for maintaining thorough knowledge and understanding of current standards and methods of water testing, regulations on drinking water monitoring and other principles and testing methods currently available in the market related to pathogen detection in water and food samples. Her role also demands building relationships with scientists at universities and other organisations to maintain strong knowledge of the current state of the art. 

    Before joining Akvo, Rajshree was a research scientist at TCS Innovation Labs – TRDDC in Pune, India and was involved in the development of different low cost water purification solutions for household purposes for removing microbial contaminants from drinking water. She has filed six patents and published eight papers in the field of Microbiology. Rajshree has a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Mumbai.

  • Chemist

    Sushant works closely with the Caddisfly product development team as a chemist. He is responsible for identifying and validating water and soil tests, as well as coordinating with prototyping and manufacturing partners. Sushant also provides training and support to Caddisfly field testers.

    Sushant started his career in 2010 as a research associate at TCS Innovation Labs (TRDDC) in Pune, India. His previous work includes managing research development activities for the development of water purification devices such as fluoride, arsenic and microbial removal from water. He has also worked on a compact grey water treatment device and filtration based on membranes. Sushant holds an MSc. in Organic Chemistry from Nowrosjee Wadia College, University of Pune.   • Computer consultant and co-founder, Kreablo AB

    Andreas is a computer consultant and cofounder of Kreablo AB, a consultancy that helps organisations build a searchable data bank to communicate and collaborate over the Web. He works closely with Akvo on the maintenance, administration and development of Akvopedia.

    Andreas has research and development experience in the field of computer science, both within academic and corporate environments. His particular areas of interest include computer security and programming languages. He advocates solutions based on free software and believes that freedom to run, study, redistribute and distribute modified versions of software is important for the end users as well as for himself as a software entrepreneur.

    Andreas has a master’s degree in computer science and a licentiate’s degree in computer communications from Luleå University of Technology. He is based in Sweden.

  • Senior consultant and director, Jac’s den Boer & Vink

    Jeroen is a senior consultant and director of Jac’s den Boer & Vink, a management consultancy for non-profit organisations. Jeroen supports Akvo’s finance and operations team on a number of financial processes, including bookkeeping, quarterly reports, annual accounts and monthly payroll processing. Furthermore, he is an advisor to Akvo’s executive and supervisory boards.

    In 2006, Jeroen started working as a financial controller for Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP). It was in this role that he was first introduced to Akvo. When Akvo was formed as an independent foundation in 2008, Jeroen played a key advisory role in setting up the statutory regulations and the description of the administrative organisation of the foundation.

    Jeroen works for a variety of non-profit organisations, including NGOs, charities and equity funds.  He holds a Master of Science in Business Economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam.

  • Akvopedia editor

    Winona is the main editor and content provider for Akvopedia, Akvo’s online resource for sharing knowledge on water and sanitation. Prior to joining Akvo in March 2011, she earned a BSc in Environmental Studies from San Francisco State University and an urban permaculture certificate. 

    Winona has initiated and participated in programmes with local, sustainable organisations, such as Green America & Global Exchange, Greywater Action, Habitat Media, the Coastal Watershed Council, and the University of California at San Francisco medical center. Winona has a BA in Writing and Literature from The California College of the Arts, which led her to teach English in South Korea, write and illustrate a graphic novella, study languages and travel to more than 14 countries. She understands how multicultural appreciation enables us to find common ground and how new learning experiences can better our lives through collaborative tools such as Akvopedia.   • Akvo ambassador

    Frodo is based in Singapore. In recent years he helped to establish Akvo’s partnerships in South East Asia focusing on Myanmar, Lao PDR, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines. Frodo joined Akvo in 2012, with extensive experience in marketing, business development, public affairs and communications. He worked at ABN AMRO Bank for eight years in a range of roles. He was PR and marketing manager for Team ABN AMRO in the Volvo Ocean Race 2005 and 2006, and was a business manager in ABN AMRO’s global public affairs team, working on climate change and water themes. He incubated several ventures, focused on sport and mobility for ABN AMRO’s Incubator Innovation Programme. In 2010 he joined the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) as senior program manager, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, focused on Public Private Partnerships and developing “Water2020”, a strategic vision for the Dutch water sector. Frodo worked for six months at the Football for Water programme, on fundraising and partnership strategy.

    Frodo now runs a water innovation consultancy called Crazy About Water. He has an MBA from Radboud University Nijmegen. His bachelors degree is in Marketing and Commercial Economics from Tilburg University, where he majored in sports marketing and management.
