Mosque Campaign for Safe Maternity - Reaching 200,000 men through Friday Speech by Imams
Moheshkhali is a very religious conservative island. 92% people are Muslim. About 90% live below the poverty line. Literacy rate is 22%. Imams are the main power players. They have the highest influence on the common public. These factors greatly contribute to Moheshkhali having the highest occurrence of child marriage, maternal mortality and violence against women. PHREB, since 2005, has been working with Imams to mobilize communities to prevent domestic, emotional, physical and sexual violence against women and girls. PHREB's Imams Movement for Women's Rights is one of the largest Imam Network in the country. In 2010, PHREB started Imams Campaign in Moheshkhali to address Maternal Mortality and all forms of Violence against Women.
